Pregnancy Ultrasound Scan in Gurgaon

Birthing is the most profound initiation to spirituality a woman can have. When you do take the home pregnancy test, it doesn’t quite seem real, but when you see the baby and the heartbeat on ultrasound, it’s so incredible. Pregnancy ultrasounds are really important to know the healthy status of the baby especially at certain time frames i.e., in the early stages of pregnancy at 6-7 weeks, between 11-13 weeks (Level 1 scan), at 18-20 weeks (Level 2 scan) and after 27-28 weeks of pregnancy (Growth dopplers).

What is a pregnancy ultrasound?

A pregnancy ultrasound is a test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the developing baby and the mother’s reproductive organs. Pregnancy ultrasounds are conducted to monitor healthy foetal development and to know about any possible complications in pregnancy.

How many Ultrasounds are done in pregnancy?

Usually, 4-5 ultrasounds are done in each pregnancy at different stages of development of the baby but number of ultrasounds may differ depending upon any possible complications.

1. Early pregnancy scan / Dating scan

This is usually done during early pregnancy at 6-7 weeks to know the location of the pregnancy whether pregnancy is intrauterine/ectopic, the number of gestational sacs, fetal pole and cardiac activity. Any other issues with uterus and the ovaries are also checked. This scan helps in the dating of the pregnancy and to know the gestational age.

2. Level 1/ NT NB Scan

This is done between week 11 and 13 of pregnancy. NT scan will assess the risk for the chromosomal abnormalities which include trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18 or trisomy 13. Read More

3. Level 2/ Anomaly scan

Anamoly scan is detailed scan ,usually done between weeks 18 and 20 to check the development of different organs of the baby like the spinal cord, brain, heart, kidneys, limbs, etc.

4. Growth scan

This is done usually after 27-28 weeks to check the growth of the baby, the blood flow to the baby, amount of amniotic food, movements of the baby, and the status of the placenta.

Types of ultrasounds

Transvaginal ultrasound

A transvaginal ultrasound is done to produce a clearer image by inserting ultrasound probe through your vagina. Early pregnancy scans are usually done by Transvaginal probe.

Transabdominal ultrasound

When the baby grows, usually the scans are done by transabdominal approach i.e through the abdomen.

3-D/ 4-D ultrasound

These are the advanced techniques to obtain better images of the baby’s face, spine etc. A 3-D ultrasound follows the same procedure as a 2-D ultrasound but comes with a special probe and software that creates the 3-D image.
